One of the most characteristic events in southern Italy is certainly ‘A chiena di Campagna, in the province of Salerno. The festival is repeated every year that traditionally floods the streets of the village with the partial deviation of the Tenza river, a tributary of the Sele. An artificial course allows the water to travel the country, in which for the occasion curious tourists flock from everywhere for an event of great suggestion and charm.
The origins of the event are lost in time. According to some, the reason for the flooding of the city was linked to the cleaning of the streets and shops, as also happened in Turin in 1700 for the cleaning of the most important streets.
According to others, it served to cleanse the city from the plague of the 1600s, when in August, to clean up the city streets, it was decided to divert the river by exploiting the purity of its waters. Another hypothesis is that the system was used to eliminate the excrement of pack animals during the summer period, when rainfall was scarce.
The main attractions will be:
* ’A bucket: Every Sunday afternoon, at 3.30 pm, a sort of challenge takes place in the streets by throwing buckets of water at each other;
* Walk: Walks on Sunday morning (12.00) and Saturday afternoon
(3.00pm) along the main street of the city.
On the Saturdays of 29/06, 20/07, 27/07, 03/08, 10/08 and 18/08, entry to the event is free: on these days only the walk is planned, however there are no buckets.
