Rome: Restriction of visitor access to the Trevi Fountain

After Barcelona and Venice where this year tourists started paying to see them, now Rome is preparing to “disappoint” its millions of fans in its attempt to cope with overtourism. The municipality of Rome is considering entering Fontana di Trevi, one of the city’s busiest monuments, ahead of 2025 expected to have increased tourist traffic.

The following year the capital of Italy will host the Jubilee, a Roman Catholic event that will last a year and will attract 32 million tourists and pilgrims. Visits to Fontana di Trevi seem to require detention and have specified times for a limited number of people. Authorities think the ticket will amount to 1 to 2 euros and for the Romans there is a chance it will be completely free. “There is a very high chance that measures will be taken to limit the number of tourists,” Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri said yesterday (04.09.2024).

“The situation in Fontana di Trevi becomes very difficult to manage technically,” he completed. Fontana di Trevi, where tradition says visitors throw a coin to ensure their return to Rome and fulfill their wishes, has always been one of Rome’s most important attractions even for world leaders. -athens-times
