On Thursday, the world’s largest flower carpet was unveiled in Brussels, Belgium, using an astonishing one million dahlias and begonias.
Spanning 80 meters in length and 24 meters in width, the vibrant display drew admiration from onlookers and participants alike.
In an interview with Kurdistan24’s correspondent Barzan Hassan, the Deputy Mayor of Brussels expressed the city’s ambition to boost tourism through this extraordinary event.
“We are proud of our country and our products, and we are very proud to showcase our talented florists and artists. Our message is that we welcome all those who visit Brussels,” said Deputy Mayor Delphine Houba.
Volunteer Paulina Rodriguez shared her excitement with Kurdistan24, describing the meticulous process of creating the flower carpet. “I am here, and I am happy because it is a new experience for me. We have to spread the flowers on the ground according to the numbers given to us. For example, number one is white flowers, and number two is red flowers,” she explained.
The event, rooted in tradition, began in 1971 when Ghent landscape architect Etienne Stautemans created the first Flower Carpet to showcase his work. Due to its overwhelming popularity, the tradition has continued biannually, with each edition featuring a different theme.
The carpet’s designer highlighted the fusion of street art with floral arrangements to represent the city’s diverse nationalities and cultures. “I pay close attention to the different flowers that are beautiful together, like the different identities in terms of history and language, all of which have made this attractive city a special world where different cultures shine,” the designer remarked.
Organized by the Tapis de Fleurs de Bruxelles Association, the event has evolved into a major cultural attraction, featuring sound and lighting effects, fireworks, jazz concerts, and traditional folk entertainment. Since 1986, the Flower Carpet has consistently drawn large crowds of local and international visitors, solidifying its place as a key event in Brussels’ cultural calendar. -kurdistan24.net
