Greece demands ‘control measures’ as furious locals are all fed up with cruise tourists

The popular Greek island of Santorini is considering new rules to limit tourism due to overcrowding. The proposed measures include banning new construction and expanding existing buildings, as well as restricting swimming pool construction. This comes amidst concerns from residents and environmentalists about the negative impact of excessive tourism on the island.

At the same time, reece has demanded the imposition of stricter rules to “control” cruise tourism amid growing concerns about the impact overtourism is having on the country.

The Mediterranean nation has long been a popular destination among European holidaymakers thanks to its many beautiful locations and rich history.

But the public is now calling on the government to intervene to clamp down on the surging number of tourists coming into the country daily.

Prime Minister Kyryakos Mitsotakis announced last month his Cabinet is considering introducing a limit on cruise ships allowed to dock at popular Greek islands such as Mykonos, Santorini and Rhodes.

He did not clarify which islands the new regulation would apply to but suggested new measures could come into effect as early as next year.

Mr Mitsotakis said: “I think we’ll do it next year,” he stated, adding that Santorini and Mykonos “are clearly suffering”.

“There are people spending a lot of money to be on Santorini and they don’t want the island to be swamped.”

An editorial on the daily national paper Ekathimerini welcomed the proposal, stating: “The initiative to consider implementing control measures in heavily visited locations, such as the island of Santorini, is a positive step.

“These measures ultimately help protect both the tourism experience and the local economy.”

Santorini, a favourite holiday spot, is reportedly nearing saturation as millions of tourists descend on the island with a population of just 15,500 each year to capture its iconic white-and-blue architecture and world-renowned sunsets.
