Sharon Stone recreates notorious ‘Basic Instinct’ leg cross scene in red lingerie

The 1992 erotic thriller, which earned Stone her first Golden Globe nomination, followed San Francisco detective Nick Curran (Michael Douglas) as he investigates a rock star’s murder and becomes involved with the mysterious Catherine Trammel (Stone), who is the main suspect.

In the iconic scene, Catherine tries to distract the cops during a police interrogation by uncrossing her legs to reveal that she isn’t wearing underwear.

The movie was a hit, grossing over $300 million at the global box office, but at the time, the scene was controversial and scandalous.

In her 2021 memoir “The Beauty of Living Twice,” Stone said that she was initially shocked by the “crotch shot” scene.

She saw it for the first time “with a room full of agents and lawyers, most of whom had nothing to do with the project,” she wrote.

“That was how I saw my vagina-shot for the first time, long after I’d been told, ‘We can’t see anything — I just need you to remove your panties, as the white is reflecting the light, so we know you have panties on.’”

She explained that afterward, she “went to the projection booth, slapped [director Paul Verhoeven] across the face, left” and proceeded to call her lawyer to ask him for advice.

Verhoeven has denied Stone’s claim that she was tricked into the nudity. The Dutch director, 85, told Variety in 2021, “She knew exactly what we were doing.”

Stone added in her memoir, “Remember, this was 1992, not now, when we see erect penises on Netflix.”

However, Stone said she went back to talk to Verhoeven again later.

“Of course, he vehemently denied that I had any choices at all. I was just an actress, just a woman; what choices could I have?” she wrote.

“But I did have choices. So I thought and thought and I chose to allow this scene in the film.”

She defended that decision, “Why? Because it was correct for the film and for the character; and because, after all, I did it.”

Stone added, “By the way, you probably don’t recall, but my name wasn’t at the top with Michael Douglas’s on the poster.”

This isn’t the first time that Stone has leaned into that “Basic Instinct” scene. She recently shared a photo of herself painting, clad in only a pair of bikini bottoms.
